Privatization of lab services continues to be a bad deal for Albertans

Today the Alberta government reiterated their plans to privatize Alberta’s medical laboratory services, announcing that they have finalized their agreement with DynaLIFE to begin providing community lab services as of December 2022.

Friends of Medicare has been outspoken about the contracting out of our lab services every step of the way. The government has never offered any evidence that this deal will save money or ensure better lab services. As Albertans have seen time and again, short-sighted privatization experiments with our health care compromise transparency and accountability, and far too often come at the expense of working conditions and quality of care.

“This government has continuously demonstrated that they will always prioritize profits over patients, and today’s non-announcement was no different,” said Chris Gallaway, executive director of Friends of Medicare. “Albertans have had enough of empty promises. Health care policy decisions must be made based on what’s best for patients, not what’s most lucrative for private, for-profit providers and their stakeholders.”
