This guide includes information and resources for navigating Alberta’s health care system and handling concerns and complaints.


1. Contact your representatives

The constituency offices of your Member of the Legislative Assembly and your Member of Parliament are equipped to help you navigate health services within their respective jurisdictions. Your correspondence with your provincial and federal government representatives can help identify service gaps and to inform necessary policy changes.

  • Alberta’s Health Advisory Councils hear public community concerns and advise Alberta Health Services on service delivery. You can request to speak at a Council meeting by completing and submitting a Request for Presentation and Agenda Items form. *Note: Applications are closed, and no dates are currently listed for future meetings*

  • Open Arms Patient Advocacy Society is a not-for-profit Alberta organization run by concerned volunteers with a commitment to assist patients in obtaining information and support when they may have unanswered questions or complaints with respect to their treatment within the health system.

MENTAL HEALTH CARE
  • For questions or concerns relating to persons who are or were subject to a community treatment order or involuntarily detained under the Mental Health Act, advocacy and rights advice, contact the Mental Health Patient Advocate.
