Health Care Workers Deserve Our Respect – Not Bullying and Intimidation

Statement from Friends of Medicare’s Executive Director, Chris Gallaway, in response to planned protests this weekend:

The news of plans for the escalation of protests around Alberta hospitals and medical facilities this weekend is deeply concerning. Our front-line health care workers have spent the last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic going above and beyond, keeping our public health care system going, and protecting Albertans. Health care workers deserve our respect and support, and our thanks for their vital service.

Yet, we are being told of extra security measures are being taken at Calgary’s Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre, while workers at other hospitals and facilities have been told to avoid wearing their scrubs when coming and going from work.

What is happening here amounts to the harassment of workers who are just trying to do their job. Any protest cannot be allowed to block access to Alberta’s health care facilities. Workers deserve to feel safe and go to work unimpeded. Patients and their families deserve access to the care they need, when they need it. Anything less is completely unacceptable.

Friends of Medicare stands with health care workers!
