Albertans Deserve Accessibility Legislation: MLAs should vote Yes on Bill 206

EDMONTON — Last week, MLA for St. Albert, Marie Renaud tabled Bill 206: Accessible Alberta Act which will be back before the Legislature today. As it stands, Alberta remains one of only two provinces in Canada without accessibility legislation, something disability organizations and advocates have been urging the provincial government to address for years.

“Accessibility legislation in Alberta is long overdue. Friends of Medicare is appealing to all Members of the Legislative Assembly to take this important legislation seriously and support getting it passed,” said Chris Gallaway, executive director of Friends of Medicare. “This private member’s bill has widespread support, because it is about ensuring basic rights and removing barriers that shouldn’t exist in the first place.”

For years, Barrier-Free Alberta has led a grassroots movement demanding strong, effective legislation to ensure every Albertan can live, work, and belong — without barriers. Friends of Medicare has been proud to support and echo the calls of that movement.

“We are calling on all MLAs to do the right thing and vote yes to Bill 206 today, and to continue supporting it at every stage until it’s passed into law,” said Gallaway. “Because this should not be a partisan issue. Every single member of the Legislature, regardless of their political party, should see this as an opportunity to do the right thing and ensure basic, province-wide standards for all Albertans.”

There is still time for Albertans to tell their MLA to vote YES on Bill 206: Accessible Alberta Act by sending an email here: https://win.newmode.net/barrierfreealberta/voteyesforbill206accessiblealbertaact
