AlyssaFriends of Medicare's 2024 Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday, June 5 — Join us to get involved in the fight to protect and strengthen Alberta's public health care!
This year, we're excited to be joined by special guests, Raj Uppal, Eyasu Yakob, and Cam Heenan for an important panel discussion, "From the Frontlines: Addressing Alberta’s Health Care Short-Staffing Crisis." Don't miss it!
Speakers panel:
Raj Uppal is a determined and outspoken labour activist whose advocacy focuses on safety, equity and equality and their intersections in health care. She is the president of CUPE 41, representing 1,400 health care workers. Raj currently serves as the diversity vice-president for CUPE Alberta, as the chair of the CUPE Alberta Health Employees Committee (AHEC), and as the worker co-chair of her worksite’s joint Health and Safety Committee. She is also a member of CUPE’s National Health and Safety Committee. |
Eyasu Yakob is a nursing student going into his final year of studies at the U of A, and working at the CFNU as a summer student. He served as president of the Canadian Nursing Students' Association from 2023-2024, representing nearly 30,000 members in advocacy to provincial and federal governments. Eyasu contributed to the development of Health Canada's Nursing Retention Toolkit as an advisory committee member, and served as student representative on the boards of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions and the Canadian Nurses Association. |
Cam Heenan has been a Paramedic in Alberta for 20 years, and is an impassioned advocate for EMS and workers rights in Alberta. As a Paramedic he has seen first hand what public health care system supports can do for the public: either a lack thereof, leading to crisis; or a properly supported system that allows people access to the care they need and deserve. Cam was recently elected the founding chair of the new Leduc-Beaumont chapter of Friends of Medicare, where he continues to fight for strong, well-resourced public health care systems. |
