Summer Update from Friends of Medicare

This is Taylor Pagotto.

You might be hearing from him over the summer. Taylor is a student in political science at MacEwan University in Edmonton, and Taylor is now working with Friends of Medicare on Outreach & Fundraising. Welcome Taylor!

First order of business, we are reaching out to our members and supporters to encourage participation in our September 28th conference on Universal Prescription Drug Coverage.

Medications are a key piece of our health care system, and it’s time we had them included. This conference will be part of our work in the fall to pressure both the federal and provincial governments to do the right thing and ensure all Canadians and Albertans have access to the medications they need regardless of ability to pay.

The conference is in Edmonton at the Chateau Louis Hotel, 11727 Kingsway from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

We have a great line-up of speakers including Adrienne Silnicki with the Canadian Health Coalition; Sharon Batt with Independent Voices for Safe and Effective Drugs; Michele Evans – Assistant Deputy Minister, Pharmaceutical and Supplementary Benefits Division in the Ministry of Health; Julie White with the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada, and more to be announced!

Tickets are only $30 to cover costs of lunch & coffee, and free for anyone low-income. Many thanks to Health Sciences Association of Alberta for their sponsorship covering low income attendance.

You can register online now:

That night after our conference, we are holding our second annual Toast to Your Health(care) fundraiser, also at the Chateau Louis, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $100, or $125 with your conference registration. Your ticket includes delicious snacks from the Chateau Louis, 1 drink ticket, entertainment, and participation in a great silent auction lineup.

Tickets available online:

If you don’t plan to attend either, you can still support our work via donation, and help us reach our fundraising target of $27,500 to cover operations for 2017:

We are also planning MLA advocacy training the first week of October in Edmonton & Calgary. The training will take place during the evening and focus on public long-term care & private clinics. We will be in touch once the venues have been booked.

After that, we are anticipating national attention on Edmonton once again as Canada’s Health Ministers meet here October 19 & 20. Stay tuned for news on that and much more through the fall.

We hope you enjoy your summer!

Thank you for your continued support of our work!
