New poll carries stark warning to Harper: Four in ten Canadians willing to change their vote if there is no national plan for the future of health care
July 24, 2013
(NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ON) - Canadians are clear in their desire that Prime Minister Stephen Harper call a First Ministers meeting to discuss the future of health care. Many of them are also prepared to change their party support if the federal party they currently support fails to present a plan for the future of health care. This according to the results of a survey conducted on behalf of the Canadian Health Coalition by Nanos Research.

Take Action on For-Profit Blood Plasma Clinics
Last week, Friends of Medicare signed on to an open letter calling on Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq to consult with Canadians on the contentious issue of whether Health Canada should approve for-profit, paid-donation blood plasma clinics to operate. After the tainted blood scandals of the 1980s, and the recommendations to not accept paid donor blood and plasma that followed, we're concerned that the Minister is rushing to approve these clinics based on a business interest, not the best interests of Canadians. You can read the letter here to find out more about the potential risks to this change in policy and to see who else has signed on to the letter: http://www.canadiandoctorsformedicare.ca/an-open-letter-to-health-minister-leona-aglukkaq.html

Firing of the AHS Board - an abrupt ending to a costly experiment
With the firing of the AHS Board, "the question that Albertans should be asking is why the Premier and the Minister of Health do not read the employment contracts that are offered to Executives before hiring them?. They are the ones that are ultimately responsible for the decisions that are being made regarding the use of our public health dollars," indicates Sandra Azocar, Executive Director of Friends of Medicare.

Patient-based funding does not translate into quality care for seniors and disabled Albertans
Friends of Medicare is joining health care professionals who today are standing in opposition to so-called 'patient-based funding.' "As Canadians, we value our publicly-delivered and publicly-funded health care system, and we need to put the well-being of people and the health of our society at the forefront of our budgetary decisions," said Sandra Azocar, Executive Director of Friends of Medicare.

Alberta Government Fails Albertans by Cutting Health Care in Today's Budget
Three years ago, the Alberta Government and then Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky proudly announced "Alberta's 5-year Health Action Plan". In this action plan it was noted that "within 5 years, Albertans can expect a stronger more integrated, province-wide health system." It would stand to reason that we can all assume that long term planning is carried out through a process that involves relying on committed money and not money contingent on the price of oil.
