  • Vouchers for Surgeries Another Blow to Public Hospitals

  • Red Alert: Are Our Hospitals Next on the Privatization Agenda?

EDMONTON — On page 13 of last week’s Budget 2025 Fiscal Plan there is a reference to the change of ownership for Alberta’s hospitals. As of April 1st, the titles for hundreds of health care facilities will be directly under the ownership of the provincial government through Alberta Infrastructure. As one Calgary Herald columnist summed it up over the weekend: “Sell off hospitals? The UCP Budget makes it possible.”

  • Budget Continues Agenda of Health Care Destruction and Privatization, While Ignoring Frontline Workers

Initial Budget Response from Chris Gallaway, Executive Director of Friends of Medicare:

EDMONTON — “Albertans are worried about accessing the health care they need when they need it. Heading into Budget 2025, we were watching for key investments in public health care including prioritizing action on health care capacity and workforce planning for a growing province. Unfortunately for Albertans, that’s not what we saw in today’s budget.

  • Transferring Hospitals Away from Alberta Health Services is about Politics, not Care

EDMONTON — At a recent UCP townhall in Drayton Valley, Danielle Smith shared her plans to remove Alberta Health Services (AHS) as the operator of some provincial hospitals, suggesting other options to manage the facilities, such as turning facilities over to Covenant Health (Alberta’s Catholic health operator). • Another Report Validates Concerns About Failing Surgical Privatization

EDMONTON — A new report released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) shows that the UCP’s privatization of Alberta’s surgical services have failed to deliver on promises to reduce wait times. • Not again! Alberta should say no to Public-Private Partnerships

Last week, the Alberta government sent out a post-budget update on the Red Deer Hospital project, which included their plans for Phase 2 of the project to include: “construction of an ambulatory care building using a public-private partnership (P3) delivery model.” P3s are well known to be more expensive, while harming public services. Previous attempts to use a P3 model to build labs and hospitals in Alberta have repeatedly been fought against and rejected by patients and health care workers.
