Alberta's Healthcare System is Being Dismantled
The moments where we need healthcare are some of our most vulnerable. You deserve a system that supports you. But Albertans are worrying about what we're experiencing:
Rather than addressing these very real concerns, the government is spending their time dismantling our public healthcare system with a massive restructuring and further privatization. It’s an age-old strategy create chaos and then push privatization as the answer to the problems they created in the first place.
The Evidence is Clear
Driving Away Professionals
Due to chronic under funding, 93% of Alberta's nurses reported burnout, leading many to leave our system, and 43% of doctors plan to leave the province by 2029.
Service Delays
Following privatization, Alberta saw significant delays and disruptions to our lab services, and the increased use of private, for-profit surgical centres has meant we’ve done fewer surgeries in our hospitals this year than last year.
Failed Experiments
The 2024 budget revealed that the failed privatization of our lab services cost Albertans at least $97 million, without delivering the promised cost savings or services needed.
Divided Resources
Only 59% of patients waiting for priority surgical procedures received care within clinically recommended times as the government reallocated funds to private contracts instead.
"We can rebuild our healthcare by respecting frontline workers, investing in a robust workforce plan, and by putting patients before profits and politics."
We Can Rebuild Our Public Healthcare
Much of our challenges in healthcare can be solved by spending our public dollars on a public system. The government should put an end to chaotic restructuring and privatization schemes, and instead invest in stabilizing the system, now. That means finally creating a workforce plan for health care workers that prioritizes recruitment and retention, and opening up more spaces for people to get the care they need.
