National Medicare Week - Write Your MP!

Via our partners in the Canadian Health Coalition

"November 29 - December 5, 2015 is National Medicare Week, an important moment to celebrate our public health care system that is the pride of our nation. It is also a crucial time to focus on our vision for public health care moving forward.

With the recent commitment of our Prime Minister to work with the provinces to negotiate a new health accord there is great work ahead of us. Our movement will push to ensure this agreement will adequately protect our health care system from ongoing threats of privatization and international trade deals, while also including measures to provide a National Drug Plan and a National Strategy for Seniors Care that are essential to caring for everyone
in Canada.

This week health care advocates from coast to coast to coast will pull together to send a strong message to our newly elected government that we expect strong action to preserve and expand our public health care system."

We're including the CHC sample letter to write your MP below. You can find out who your MP is by providing your postal code at this link.

This is just the first step in reaching out to our new Government in Ottawa. Please forward us any responses you may get, and let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Dear [Name of your Member of Parliament],

Congratulations on your recent election to our Parliament, representing the voices of our citizens is certainly a great honour and responsibility.

I am writing to you today, as a part of Canada's National Medicare Week. At this time each year we celebrate our public health care system as well as continue to work towards its improvement and preservation.

As a public health care advocate in our country, I am reaching out to you today to share our movement's vision for public health care. I join the voices of many others across the country reaching out their Members of Parliament and the Minister of Health to make our expectations for Canada's public health care system clear.

[It is recommended to include some information here about why public health care remains a top priority for you, and information you may know about why it is a concern in your riding.]

I am pleased that the Prime Minister has committed to renegotiate the health accordwith the provinces to provide a long-term funding agreement. Additionally, there is a pressing need for a National Drug Plan. You are no doubt aware that almost a quarter of people in our country have not taken necessary medications because they could not pay for them and that the implementation of this plan could save as much as $11 Billion annually.

And as we look at the increasing health care needs of our aging population, it is clear that we are in desperate need of a plan. A National Strategy for Seniors Care must include the appropriate continuum of care providing hospital care, long-term care, homecare as well as hospice and palliative care. Our aging population deserves nothing less.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
