Alberta Health Services relies on Home Care as an integral part of the health system, yet previous governments managed to privatize this area by stealth. Private delivery has become so normalized that Albertans no longer know where their services are coming from nor do they ask.
Unlike other provinces, almost all the delivery of home care services in Alberta, with the exception of acute care, is done completely by private companies, many of which are for-profit corporations.
In a private home care system like Alberta’s, private corporations can only make profits by providing less care to patients or paying home care workers low wages, and sometimes both. The expansion needed in home care will not be possible if we can not attract staff to do the work. Home care patients and front-line staff cannot continue to be the vehicle through which companies make their profits. If we continue to contract home care services out to private corporations, the quality of our home care will never reach its full potential.
Friends Of Medicare believes that we need to reverse and stop further privatization of home care in Alberta. We need to strengthen our community and home care program so that those who need assistance to safely remain at home can do so.
